Donald  M.  "Don"  Unkel  Sr.
Donald “Don” M. Unkel, Sr., age 85 of Sayreville, peacefully passed away Sunday February 11, 2018 at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune with his loving family at his side. Born and raised in Sayreville, Don was a lifelong resident of the borough where he married and raised a wonderful family. After graduating from Sayreville High School in 1949, he attended trade school where he studied carpentry while working as a master carpenter and millwright with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners Local #1006 (now Local #254). He was also superintendent with Brennan Bros. of Avenel until his retirement over 20 years ago. When he wasn’t working, Don was a true family man, spending much of his time attending his daughters’ many dance recitals. He was also a true hunter, fisherman, camper, and loved taking care of his many horses. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Donald is predeceased by his parents Maximillion and Mamie Unkel and his sister Naomi Koenig. Surviving are his beloved wife of 66 years Lila (Kettner) Unkel of Sayreville; his 9 beloved children and their spouses Don, Jr. & Jacque Unkel of Parlin, Donna & Charles Cunliffe of Barnegat, Debra Karbowski of Sayreville, Cindy & John Andl of Howell, LuAnn & Frank Cofone of Monroe, Dean & Maria Unkel of FL, Laurie & Greg Aich of Morgan, Jamie & Joe Albany of Jackson, and Elissa & William Franey of Spotswood; his 32 wonderful grandchildren and 26 dear great-grandchildren; his loving cat Charlie; as well as many other loving family members.
Funeral services will take place Thursday 10am at the Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home 15 Cherry Lane, Parlin, with burial to follow at New Calvary Cemetery.
